The United Arab Emirates is observing a 10-day mourning period in Dubai, following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This period of reflection underscores Sheikh Ahmed’s significant contributions to the country, notably in law enforcement and sports, which continue to impact the nation.
Sheikh Ahmed, who passed away on Monday, was a prominent figure in the UAE’s development. His funeral took place at the Umm Hurair Cemetery in Dubai after prayers at the Zabeel Grand Mosque. The event was attended by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, along with other rulers and crown princes of the Emirates, who gathered to support Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, in his time of grief.
The gathering at the Zabeel Majlis included notable leaders such as Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi of Sharjah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi of Fujairah, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla of Umm Al Quwain, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah. They collectively paid tribute to Sheikh Ahmed, recalling his dedication to the UAE since its formation.
Sheikh Ahmed held influential roles as deputy chairman of Dubai Police and chairman of ARM Holding. His passion for sports led to the establishment of the Jebel Ali Racecourse in 1990, and he served as president of Al Wasl Sports Club, fostering the growth of local sports.
The mourning period allows the nation to honor Sheikh Ahmed’s legacy, reflecting on his lifelong service and the lasting impact of his work on the community and the nation at large.
