The visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic alliance between the two nations, a relationship that has matured over decades through various forms of cooperation. Diplomatic ties between the UAE and Germany were established in 1972, and since then, the partnership has flourished, encompassing political, economic, energy, and cultural domains.
Trade and investment have emerged as significant pillars of this bilateral relationship. The UAE has become Germany’s leading trading partner in the Gulf region, with bilateral trade surpassing Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion) last year. Approximately 2,000 German companies, including notable names such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, have established operations in the UAE, highlighting the robust economic collaboration.
The energy sector represents another critical area of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in renewable energy, climate action, decarbonisation, and energy security. In 2022, the UAE and Germany signed an agreement to bolster energy security and industrial collaboration, which includes UAE’s supply of liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint initiatives focused on clean energy and climate efforts.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership has also expanded to include research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. A strategic partnership agreement signed in 2004 formally enhanced political ties, covering aspects such as regional security, economic cooperation, and research, thereby solidifying the relationship further.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany continues to thrive. Both countries are committed to expanding cooperation across various strategic sectors, ensuring that the partnership remains robust and mutually beneficial.
