The United States has unveiled a new tariff policy imposing duties of up to 100% on certain drones and drone components, emphasizing national security concerns and the necessity to diminish reliance on foreign supply chains, notably those dominated by China. The tariffs target unmanned aircraft systems, particularly larger models exceeding 25 kilograms and equipped with national security-related features such as thermal cameras and docking stations. These will be hit with a 100% tariff, whereas smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
In addition, the US will levy tariffs on drones and components from several key trading partners. Products originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while imports from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% tariff, provided the hardware, software, and technology stem from the listed countries or the US. The majority of these tariffs are set to be enacted on September 3.
The White House has articulated that these measures aim to bolster the US defense and industrial base, foster domestic drone manufacturing, and generate American jobs, all while decreasing dependency on overseas suppliers. China currently dominates the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI holding a significant share of the US commercial drone sector, and has previously been subjected to US restrictions over national security concerns.
US officials have raised alarms that drones manufactured abroad could pose risks related to surveillance, sensitive data gathering, and potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also previously advocated for increased domestic production to alleviate such risks. This move occurs amidst ongoing trade and technology tensions between Washington and Beijing, with China having also introduced restrictions impacting drone exports to the US and taking actions against several American companies.
