Amid escalating tensions and increasing Houthi advances in Yemen, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia have renewed their cooperation to support Yemeni government forces. The UAE has reportedly committed to resuming financial aid, while Saudi Arabia provides air support for the coalition fighting against the Houthi rebels. This development marks a potential improvement in the relationship between the two Gulf nations, which had previously experienced friction over Yemen’s political landscape and the involvement of southern separatist forces.
The renewed alliance comes as the Houthis continue to make military gains and launch attacks across the region, posing significant threats to regional stability. Saudi Arabia, in particular, has been targeted by repeated drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis, impacting airports and energy infrastructure. In response, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has initiated a counteroffensive to reclaim territories, including areas near Marib and the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab Strait, although progress remains limited.
Tensions have also risen in Aden, as evidenced by a recent Houthi missile strike near the city’s airport, which occurred while a passenger aircraft was preparing for take-off. This incident followed another attack on a presidential palace, resulting in at least five fatalities and 16 injuries. Such developments have heightened regional security concerns, with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi indicating that Egypt might take defensive actions to protect Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom considering additional military assistance requests.
The humanitarian crisis in Yemen continues to intensify, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict. According to the United Nations, more than 200,000 people have been displaced since August, putting immense pressure on humanitarian organizations operating in the area. The renewed cooperation between the UAE and Saudi Arabia aims to address the Houthi threat while attempting to stabilize the situation in Yemen.
